Construída para linhas expressas de ponta, a BR Class 52 percorria a região oeste das BRs em até 145 km/h. Os recordes não oficiais dizem que elas já chegaram a 177 km/h. Apesar disso, elas determinaram o padrão para a operação das GWR expressa nos anos 1960 e 1970, provando que a tração hidráulica a diesel era mais eficiente. No entanto, elas não duraram muito e apenas 7 das 74 locomotivas restaram até os dias atuais e estão na Ferrovia West Somerset.'
