Construida para trabajar en líneas exprés de los mejores enlaces, la Serie 52 BR pasó sus días circulando por la Western Region de BR a una velocidad máxima de 145 km/h, y los registros extraoficiales afirman que llegó a alcanzar una velocidad de 177 km/h. En cualquier caso, estableció el estándar para las operaciones exprés de GWR durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970, demostrando así que la tracción diésel-hidráulica podía usarse de forma eficaz. Pero eso no duró mucho, y solo 7 de 74 locomotoras han sobrevivido hasta hoy y llaman hogar a la West Somerset Railway.'
